  1. Disc Brake

  3. The disc brake is a
  4. flat disc.  On each
  5. side are brake pads
  6. held in a caliper. 
  7. When the brakes are
  8. applied, the pads
  9. press against the
  10. disc to create
  11. friction and slow
  12. down the vehicle. 
  13. A lot of heat is
  14. generated, which
  15. can cause the
  16. brakes to fade, or
  17. even cease to
  18. function, and so
  19. many cars today
  20. have ventilated
  21. disc brakes. 
  22. Ventilated discs
  23. have air passages
  24. in them to help
  25. dissipate heat more
  26. efficiently.
